Today, some people rely on collagen to promote joint and nail health, reduce hair loss and wrinkles, and more. But can one scoop of collagen really do all of this? Like every other product, the truth lies in the science. Some benefits of collagen have been proven, while others are still being researched. This article summarises where collagen can help and the science behind its uses.

The most proven benefits of collagen powder are improved skin hydration and elasticity. It also reduces wrinkles. There is evidence, though less proven, for joint and nail health and bone density. There are very few studies on muscle growth, hair growth, and gut health. For these reasons, the real question remains: does collagen powder work? For some outcomes, collagen, when consumed as hydrolysed collagen peptides for 8-12 weeks or longer, may help. The outcomes can depend on the product, diet, individual health, age, and the dose.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What Collagen Powder Is and the Different Types

Collagen Powder Benefits: What the Evidence Shows

“Isn’t Collagen Just Digested?” How Collagen Actually Works

Safety, Side Effects and Who Should Be Cautious

What to Look for in a Collagen Powder

Conclusion

What Collagen Powder Is and the Different Types

The most common form of collagen powder is hydrolysed collagen peptides. It could help keep skin hydrated and improve the skin’s stretchability. This could help reduce the appearance of some of the fine lines. Any improvements will be small, though. Taking collagen powder does not replace the benefits of sunscreen, adequate protein, sleep, or a proper diet.

Funding bias is an important concern. A 2025 meta-analysis of 23 studies with 1,474 participants found some positive changes when all studies were analysed together. It rather means that the results should be analysed with caution.

Evidence grade: Strongest among collagen claims, but not conclusive.

2. Joint Comfort and Function — Moderate Evidence

Since collagen is a building block for cartilage, the tissue that cushions joints, there has been some studies on collagen for joint pain.

A 2025 meta-analysis found that collagen supplementation for knee osteoarthritis improved pain and functioning. Bone Mineral Density — Moderate but Emerging Evidence

Bone isn’t just hard calcium. There are collagen frameworks that add structure and some flexibility to the bone. Due to this, there has been some speculation that collagen peptides may help with bone mineral density.

In one of the few studies that isolates collagen from other supplements, postmenopausal women with age-related bone mineral density loss were given 5 grams of collagen peptides per day for a year. Improvement of bone mineral density was documented in the spine and the femoral neck of the women in the study versus the placebo group. Improvement was seen in later studies as well.

These studies have shown some positive results, especially for postmenopausal women. Unfortunately, these studies are few in number and focus on specific collagen peptides. Further studies must be done before collagen can be seen as a preventative or treatment option for bone fractures or osteoporosis.

Collagen should never be used to substitute medical care for low bone mineral density. Bone health is a combination of many factors, like resistance exercise, calcium, vitamin D, protein, hormones and others.

Evidence grade: Moderate, with more long-term research needed.

4. Brittle Nails and Hair Health — Mixed Evidence

The evidence pertaining to nails is more positive than that which relates to hair. An improvement with nails was seen in a study that gave participants 2.5 grams of collagen peptides per day for 24 weeks.

The study lacked a placebo group, so we can’t know for sure the impact of collagen. There are many other factors that could contribute to nail growth such as iron levels, healthy eating, and lifestyle.

There is even more concern for the hair category. Hair is mostly made of keratin. Sure, collagen will offer some amino acids, but there is hardly any evidence that collagen powder will help hair growth or even reduce hair loss.

Some studies do look at collagen along with biotin and other vitamins. One study from 2024 looked at a multi-ingredient supplement. It reported positive changes in hair and skin appearance. But they found no statistically significant increase in total hair count. In this case, the effect of collagen could not be determined.

So, we cannot say that collagen has the same positive effects for hair and skin. There is much more research on the positive effects of collagen on skin, and the research for hair is still very much lacking.

Evidence grade: Moderate-low for brittle nails and weak for hair growth.

5. Muscle Mass and Strength — Weak or Conditional Evidence

Some studies suggest that collagen peptides do impact body composition. But only when paired with resistance training. One of these studies focused on older males and muscle loss. In this study, those who supplemented with a collagen peptide, while participating in resistance training, gained significantly more fat-free mass. Also, they gained strength compared to those in the placebo group.

Findings from a 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis suggest exercise may lead to favourable changes in body composition, strength and enhanced recovery. Variation due to resistance training is expected.

As Collagen is an incomplete protein (low in essential amino acids), its consumption for muscle building is not rational. Collagen provides limited leucine and is low in several amino acids required for muscle protein synthesis. For muscle building, it is better to consume dairy, eggs, soy, or combinations of plant proteins.

Collagen may assist in the development of some muscle-related connective tissue. But it should not be a substitute for high-quality dietary protein or whey protein.

Evidence grade: Weak to moderate when paired with resistance training.

6. Gut Health — Weak and Unproven

Collagen is advertised in some circles as a product to “heal the gut” and restore gut integrity. While this assertion has gained some traction, evidence from human studies that support this claim is lacking.

While Collagen does contain some amino acids, such as glycine and proline, that are used in some of the body’s connective tissues, their presentation in a supplement does not substantiate the claim that it may help relieve bloating, reflux, IBD or “leaky gut syndrome.”

Most evidence of the purported benefits is from laboratory or animal studies and fails to demonstrate a clinical benefit.

Collagen should not be used to treat gastrointestinal diseases. Collagen gets broken down into amino acids and small peptides, just like any other dietary protein. An important point made by MD Anderson’s evidence-based guide is that we don’t digest a scoop of collagen, send it to a body part, and then directly deliver it to skin, hair, or joints. Our body decides where to send the absorbed amino acids.

On the other hand, hydrolysed collagen, after digestion, could have some effects besides providing amino acids. After digestion, hydroxyproline peptides can cross the bloodstream and the rest of the body. Some of these Pro-Hyp and Gly-Pro-Hyp peptides could also potentially act as a signal to stimulate collagen-producing, skin-supporting fibroblasts.

This signalling effect could also help understand why most collagen digestion studies report positive skin results. This signalling is also only a proposed mechanism, and we don’t truly know the effects of every collagen supplement.

The answer definitely lies somewhere in the middle. Collagen never travels to skin or joints fully intact, but absorbed collagen peptides could definitely have some biological effects. A protein-rich diet also provides amino acids and almost identical peptides, and a lot of these studies report positive results, funded by the collagen industry. Collagen definitely isn’t a necessary supplement.

How to Take Collagen Powder

The best method to use collagen powder really depends on the reason for taking it, on the type of collagen, and on how much each serving contains. Currently, there is not enough evidence to support claims of improvements in hair growth, muscle growth, and gut health.

Consider using hydrolysed collagen powder with a source and effective dose (amount of collagen) that also has vitamin C.
